Grupo PIASA, one of Mexico’s leading sugar milling companies, has become the first sugar mill in the country to join the VIVE Programme, an internationally recognised continuous improvement programme for sustainable agriculture and supply chains.
Founded in 1988, Grupo PIASA (Promotora Industrial Azucarera S.A. de C.V.) operates three of the most productive sugar mills in Mexico: Tres Valles in Veracruz, Adolfo López Mateos in Oaxaca, and Plan de San Luis in San Luis Potosí. Together, these mills process over 5 million tons of sugarcane annually, contributing around 10 percent of Mexico’s total sugar production.
The company is known for its strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and community development. It has invested significantly in renewable energy, including biomass cogeneration, and supports more than 14,000 sugarcane growers while directly employing over 2,400 people across its operations.
Grupo PIASA’s participation aligns closely with the VIVE Programme’s strategic approach to gradually scaling with producers who are well positioned to embed sustainability into industrial supply chains. As a leader in Mexico’s sugar sector with a demonstrated commitment to responsible sourcing, PIASA exemplifies the type of organisation that can help drive meaningful, scalable impact.

Benjamin French, Associate Director of the VIVE Programme, commented:
“We are delighted to be starting our journey in Mexico with Grupo PIASA. This is an important milestone for the programme and reflects our commitment to a gradual and thoughtful approach in the region. Our aim is not to run the programme with just anyone, but to grow in a way that is strategic and responsive to demand from end users, while working with producers who are genuinely committed to embedding VIVE as part of their sustainability journey. We look forward to building momentum together.”
Juan Hawach, Chief Executive Officer of Grupo PIASA, stated:
“At Grupo PIASA, we are deepening our commitment to sustainability across every aspect of our value chain. Through our integration into the VIVE Programme, we are adopting a continuous improvement framework that enhances efficiency, strengthens traceability, and promotes responsible management throughout our industrial, agricultural, and logistics operations. This step reflects our vision to position Grupo PIASA as a sustainability leader in the sugar industry, creating enduring environmental, social, and economic value at the heart of our business.”
Grupo PIASA’s involvement reflects a growing movement in Latin America toward more resilient, responsible, and inclusive agricultural supply chains.
